The Lake District occurs in the northwest quadrant of Burns Bog. These water bodies are created by peat harvesting. They are now extremely important habitats for various "marsh-dwelling" birds. These birds like the Lake District because the water bodies provide shelter, protection and food. Also, the Lake District is hard to access. The lack of visitors makes the area a perfect heaven for birds. Many of these bird species cannot tolerate the slightest signs of disturbance.
